Good Daisy

When my children very young we had a bedtime routine. We’d tuck them in and before we left the room I’d say “In a minute I’m going to turn out the light, and you can close your eyes and relax and fall asleep. You can dream about all the good things that happened today and when you wake up in the morning its a whole new day and you can choose to have a good daisy.”

This routine was intended to help them focus on the good things that happened during the day rather than the bad things. If they had had a bad day it was intended to let them know that each day is a blank slate and it doesn't matter what yesterday was like because its a new opportunity to have a good day (or good daisy as I like to say.) The children seemed to like the routine because if I left the room without saying it they’d ask me “can you say what you normally say.”

“Have a good daisy” became a saying in our house but as the children got older the routine kind of tapered off. My daughter recently graduated High School. Many of the students decorated their mortarboard - my daughter included. I didn’t get to see it until after the graduation. To my (happy) surprise, this is what she decorated it with.

There are a couple of lessons here. First, you never know what you say to your children that will stay with them. Second, remembering that every day is a whole new day and you can choose to have a good daisy is important for people of all ages to remember.

Have a good daisy!!
